The late L T C Rolt, well known authority on engineering and industrial archaeology, described this book in his introduction as an autobiography of very unusual and many sided interests. Mr Fletcher's working life may have been typical of those of his contemporaries in Humberside, but, So far as I am aware, not one of them has possessed the capacity to recall his life in such vivid and scrupulous detail. His description of his childhood on board a Yorkshire keel is of the greatest value to anyone concerned with Britons inland waterways. Those interested in local history, to which this chronicle of Yorkshire Life makes an important contribution, will also find the account fascinating.
With an introduction by L. T. C. Rolt.
