This book covers Early Christian, Byzantine, Romanesque and Gothic art in four main sections, tracing the evolution of Christian art through its many vicissitudes and in its many guises to the waning of Gothic in the 15th century. Although many of us would feel that we are reasonably familiar with the subject, people with a full awareness of the breathtaking range of styles, forms and artistic media that were involved and of the complex relationships that existed between them - notably between Romanesque and Gothic - are few and far between.
