Sean Hignett, in this first biography of Brett, shows how her adult life contrasted with her privileged but extraordinarily sheltered upbringing as the daughter of Viscount Esher, confidant of Queen Victoria and Edward VII.
 
Brett was a contemporary at the Slade with Mark Gertler, Dora Carrington and Stanley Spencer.. Through Ottoline Morrell and Garsington, she became emotionally entwined with Katherine Mansfield and John Middleton Murry, upon whose relationship fresh light is cast. Partially deaf for most of her adult life, Brett was an avid correspondent and left journals, diaries and an unpublished autobiography upon which the author has been able to draw.
