This book is designed to appeal to Lake District visitors, folk-song researchers and folk singers nationwide. It is a collection of songs written by Cumbrians during the hundred years 1770 to 1870. During the heart of this period, the songwriters of Cumbria
—Robert Anderson and Susanna Blamire, in particular-had important contributions to make to the British song and ballad world.
 
Composing words and setting them to popular tunes of the day, they left many songs of merit which have since been neglected.
 
This selection of songs has been chosen with modern audiences in mind. It includes music, as well as guitar chords where considered suitable, together with notes on the song themes and tunes.
Keith Gregson, a Cumbrian by parentage, numbers song writing and folk dancing among his hobbies. He is chairman of the Durham District of the English Folk Dance and Song Society.
