Flood Tide by Valerie Hastings.
During a great storm in 1953 the sea broke through the Dutch dykes and over a hundred towns and villages were flooded. Many people were drowned, and many more made homeless by the raging torrents.
This story is set against the background of that disaster and concentrates on Sara and her brother, Peter, who are left in the care of their Uncle Jan when the dyke breaks and the surrounding countryside is flooded. The three escape in a rowing boat, but this is only the beginning of their adventures, in the flood-swollen regions of Holland.
