Gilbert without Sullivan by W S Gilbert
Gilbert without Sullivan? Nonsense. With apologies to Sullivan, however, Gilbert with Lubin may well prove to be the most exciting partnership of the season. WS Gilbert lyricist, dramatist and A S Sullivan the composer began their collaboration in 1871. By 1896, the year their association came to an end, the pair had produced a total of 14 light offers. Among the perennial favourites are the four operators HMS Pinafore, Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado, and The Gondoliers, whose full Libretti are included in this volume. These works are as vibrant today as they were 100 years ago, when British and American audiences were first treated to their bouncy rhythms and humorous lyrics, and the inspired addition of LB Lubens charming and extravagantly detailed drawings will only further appreciation for Gilbert's words and notions.
