Algernon Charles Swinburne was an English poet and critic born in 1837. He was known for his mastery of verse and exploration of controversial themes such as masochism and lesbianism. A talented lyrical poet, Swinburne was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1903, 1904, and 1905. Though he failed to win, his contributions were significant. Swinburne pioneered the roundel poetic form and wrote several novels and collections of poetry including Poems and Ballads and Tristram of Lyonesse. Despite critics denouncing his work as indecent, Swinburne is remembered as one of the most accomplished poets of the Victorian era.

This book came from the library of Philip Staniforth Newell and is signed by him. I believe him to be the former Headmaster of Greshams School who was responsible for evacuating the entire school to Newquay during the war
