Extensive research has revealed a remarkable story of a business whose products gained a high international reputation and were exported to countries near and far. Established in 1800, Smyths survived the agricultural recessions of the 19th century, the economic depressions of the 20th century and a disasterous fire, only to be overtaken by technological developments and mass production which caused its demise after nearly 170 years of production.
