The Collectors Book of English Antiques by Edward T Joy and Geoffrey Wills

 

This book provides A concise and well illustrated survey of English antiques from early Tudor times to the present day. The furniture section falls conveniently into periods. First the Age of Oak, in the latter phase of which attempts were made to merge Renaissance motives into the traditional pattern of sturdy and utilitarian furniture. The Walnut period, when foreign techniques were readily absorbed by English Craftsman and translated into a true national style. Then for about 1725, the beginning of the great classical period of English furniture with the coming of Mahogany, the king of Furniture Woods. The second section of the book concentrates on China with each section complete in itself and are numbered separately from the section.
