Bonwicke, Ambrose the Younger (1692-1714), a nonjuror, was the eldest son of Ambrose Bonwicke the Elder. He attended Merchant Taylors' School, where his father had been headmaster, from 1703. Despite excelling academically and being eligible for admission to St. John's College, Oxford, his refusal to read the prayer for the queen and the house of Hanover led him to seek admission at St. John's College, Cambridge. He obtained a scholarship but struggled with the demands of his conscience. He passed away on May 5, 1714, in his college study due to his rigorous self-discipline and dedication to religious pursuits. His father later penned a biography at the suggestion of William Bowyer.
