In the life of Christ, Dean Farrar studiously avoided adding another to the endless controversial volumes on the authenticity of the gospel. His great aim was to present a narrative based on the broadest lines of probability, an intense, human story which should draw the interests of the simple and unlearned. He succeeded beyond his hopes. The book at once attained great popularity, and 12 editions were sold within a year of its publication in 1874.
