The careful attention paid to detail in costume in the modern theatre is a comparatively recent development. High standards of authenticity or expected nowadays and extensive. The importance of this has increased the need for knowledge of manners and deportment, an essential study for those who would know how the figures of the polite world in other ages moved and behaved. In her foreword, John Wildeblood points out that the assumption that costume was the chief influence in deportment is only partly correct,… deportment, greetings and so forth have their origin in a way of life and cannot be separated from men’s surroundings and social habits.
