Tom, a mistreated chimney sweep, drowns while trying to escape his harsh life and transforms into a tiny water-baby. He begins a mystical journey through the river and ocean, encountering various creatures and receiving moral guidance from the fairies, Mrs. Doasyouwouldbedoneby and Mrs. Bedonebyasyoudid. Tom’s quest for redemption culminates in his journey to the Other-End-of-Nowhere and his selfless act of aiding his old master. He ultimately achieves spiritual cleanliness and returns to the world as a learned man.
