Thirty-One Brothers and Sisters by Reba Paeff Mirsky.

This is a fine tale about Nomusa, the daughter of a Zulu chief, a warm-hearted, generous girl who loves all her brothers and sisters, and enjoys helping to look after them. But Nomusa is also full of adventure, and she greatly envies her brothers when they join the men on an elephant hunt.

After her adventure with a fierce wild boar her father rewards her bravery, and Nomusa learns that being a girl has its own rewards.

Nomusa is a heroine whom girls will envy and boys will admire.
